Spirulina and Protein

Proteins are made up of complex chains of amino acids, which are critical for forming and repairing muscle and bone. But, amino acids also serve several other essential functions within the body.

Of the 22 amino acids found in proteins, eight of them are essential to healthy body functions, yet the human body cannot produce them. Therefore, these eight amino acids can only be obtained through one’s diet. The remaining amino acids are considered non-essential, because the body is already naturally producing them. However, in order for the body to be able process the non-essential amino acids, the essential amino acids, plus a sufficient amount of nitrogen, are required for the synthesizing to occur.

Unlike several other types of proteins, spirulina is considered a “complete protein,” as it is a quality source of all eight essential amino acids. Recipes with Hawaiian Spirulina

Spirulina with Fruit Juice
Begin with a teaspoonful of Spirulina mixed with fruit juice in a blender or with an electric mixer. Apple, pineapple, or papaya work the best. You can increase the amount of Spirulina to suit your taste and your personal health program.
Spirulina Smoothie
2 bananas
Half cup yogurt, one cup soymilk, or one cup of fruit juice (apple, orange, or pineapple)
One or more of the following: 1 papaya, 1 peach, 1 mango, half cup of boysenberries or raspberries 1 teaspoon Spirulina
Blend all ingredients
Papaya Spirulina Smoothie
1 ripe papaya, ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon Spirulina, Juice of one lime
Blend all ingredients
Spirulina Salsa
Add one teaspoon of Spirulina to a bowl of salsa. The Spirulina enhances the taste and gives the salsa an interesting color and a nice texture.

Guacamole
2 avocados, Cayenne pepper
2 medium tomatoes, Fresh lime juice to taste
2 tablespoons salsa, Salt to taste
1 teaspoon Spirulina, 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
Mash avocados. Add all other ingredients and blend well. Spirulina gives guacamole a beautiful color.
Avocado Dip
1 avocado, Paprika to taste
1 tablespoon sour cream, Tamari or soy sauce to taste
1 teaspoon Spirulina
Mash all ingredients together
Cream Dip
4 tablespoons sour cream or non-fat yogurt
Juice of one lemon
3 teaspoons tamari or soy sauce
1 teaspoon Spirulina
Mix all ingredients together
Another Cream Dip
4 tablespoons sour cream or non-fat yogurt
½ teaspoon garam masala & ¼ teaspoon cumin, or ¾ teaspoon curry powder
3 teaspoons tamari or soy sauce
1 teaspoon Spirulina
Small clove garlic
Mix all ingredients together
Tofu Salad
8 ounces firm tofu 1 bell pepper (green or red)
2 medium tomatoes 1 medium zucchini
1 medium grated carrot 2 stalks celery
2 spring onions, finely chopped 1 tablespoon tamari or soy sauce
Generous pinch of basil, thyme, and marjoram
Hot pepper sauce or cayenne pepper (to taste)
1 heaped teaspoon Spirulina
Mix all ingredients together. Almost any combination of raw vegetables can be put into a tofu salad.

Pesto (pasta sauce)
1 packed cup fresh basil leaves, 3-5 tablespoons virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons parmesan cheese, 3 cloves garlic
2 teaspoons Spirulina, Pinch of salt
2 ounces pine nuts, macadamia nuts, almonds, or walnuts
Blend all ingredients
Rice Topping
3 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 tablespoon roasted sesame seeds
Dried bonito (optional), 1 teaspoon Spirulina
Combine all ingredients and serve over rice
Spirulina Paté
Juice of half lemon, 1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 clove crushed garlic
1 teaspoon Spirulina
Mix the Spirulina with the garlic. Add the lemon juice and soy sauce, and mix well with a fork. Stir in the olive oil. Serve on toast or crackers with slices of tomato and onion (optional).
Popcorn
Grated parmesan cheese, Garlic powder (to taste)
½ tablespoon dulse flakes, Cayenne pepper, chili pepper, or paprika (or other seaweed), 1 tablespoon Spirulina
Make popcorn as usual. Mix together any or all of the above ingredients. While popcorn is still warm, add seasoning mixture and shake vigorously so that popcorn is evenly coated.
